TUBU Theatre Ethics

  1. Theatre Lingo: 

    1. Backstage - The area behind the curtains including the dressing rooms, green room, hallways, and bathroom (accessible only to theatrical team). 

    2. Onstage - The stage itself between the curtains and audience. 

    3. Pre-Show - The time before a show starts when actors and crew are already backstage, prepared and ready to go. This time is also when music is often playing, and the audience is arriving. 

    4. Intermission - Optional time in the middle of a performance where there is a break for everyone for a selected period of time. 

    5. Call Time - When cast and crew are told to arrive. It is very important to arrive at this time even if you think you have more than enough time. The Stage Manager has given you this call time for a reason. If there is an issue with your call time, communicate it with your Stage Manager. 

    6. Up Stage (US) - The area of the stage towards the curtain. 

    7. Down Stage (DS) - The area of the stage towards the audience. 

    8. Stage Right (SR) - When you are on the stage facing the audience, the right side of the stage. 

    9. Stage Left (SL) - When you are on the stage, facing the audience, the left side of the stage. 

  2. Leadership Titles:

    1. Co-Founders - Founders of TUBU Fest.

    2. Executive Director - oversees all aspects of operations, strategic planning, fundraising, budget, staff leadership and ensuring TUBU Fest achieves its mission. Present as needed during tech, present during shows. 

    3. Outreach Coordinator - Deeply involved and connected with the community establishing relationships within the community to help grow TUBU Fest. Present during shows.

    4. Production Manager - Works closely with designers, the technical crew, and management team to ensure the technical elements of the show run smoothly, efficiently and safely. Present during Tech and all shows.

    5. Stage Manager - overseeing all technical aspects of a theatrical production, ensuring the smooth running of rehearsals and performances by essentially acting as the central hub of communication between all departments to deliver a high-quality production. Present during Tech and all shows.

    6. Lighting Designer - Will be responsible for the design, installation, and operation of the lighting in TUBU Fest. Present during Tech.

    7. Set and Props Designer - Will be designing, providing and organizing a minimal number of set and prop pieces per show. Present during tech.

    8. Costume Designer - Providing and organizing costumes for TUBU Fest. Present during tech.

  3. Team

    1. Every show is a team. Always. It requires a group of people to run a theatre venue, to run a show and absolutely to run a festival. No one person runs it all. You are absolutely important and so is everyone else on your team. Responsibilities are shared, so it’s important to respect one another by being on time, communicating clearly, memorizing your lines, putting in the work and participating. 

  4. Rehearsal Etiquette

    1. It is important to be on time, early if possible. If you are late, everyone else has to wait on you and it’s disrespectful to everyone’s time. If you are going to be late for any reason, communicate with your stage manager/director. 

    2. Not showing up is never ok. If you cannot attend rehearsal, communicate with your stage manager/director as soon as possible, including your accurate estimated time of arrival. You play an important role and when you aren’t there it impacts everyone. 

    3. Memorizing your lines 

      1. If you need accommodations to help memorize your lines, communicate with your director and info@tubufest.com so that we can ensure your accommodations are fully and properly met. 

      2. Putting in the proper amount of time to run your lines is a critical part of being a professional actor. Please respect your team by doing so.

  5. Tech Etiquette

    1. Tech Week is where all technical elements of your show come together. This is NOT where you get off book and rehearse your show for the first time. Your show needs to be fully blocked and ready to make minor adjustments as needed to account for the space difference between your rehearsal space and the theatre. It is also the time to add lighting, costumes, set and props in the actual space itself. Prior to this, you should have already consulted with designers, and props and costumes should be close to finalized. IF you have additional time to run your show during your tech you may use it. There will not be additional rehearsals in the theatre this year. 

    2. Focus, listen to your director, stage manager, and designers. Follow instructions clearly. Your tech time will go quickly, so it is important to stay on task to get as much done as possible in your allotted time. 

    3. Tech moves from one cue to another (cue-to-cue) and you may run some lines in various parts of your show to see how lighting, set, sound or other aspects look or sound. 

    4. Once your time is done, exit the stage, go backstage and change out of costumes. Check in with your director to see if you are free to leave.

    5. Check with the costume designer if you want to take a costume piece with you. Once you load into the theatre/tech your show, you may not take any costumes or props without designer approval, even if they belong to you personally. This is to ensure everything is accounted for and ready for your performance. 

    6. Be quiet during other peoples' tech rehearsals,  and if you need to talk, talk softly. 

  6. Show Etiquette

    1. Arrive during your call time, go back stage, check in with the stage manager, get ready and once people start arriving you can no longer leave backstage. The audience cannot see you in costume until show time. 

    2. Pay attention to the show by watching the monitor in the green room or listening to the speakers backstage. 

  7. Backstage Etiquette

    1. Volume - stay quiet backstage as you can be heard easily onstage. 

    2. No food in the dressing rooms. 

    3. Food only in the green room. 

    4. Clean up after yourself. 

    5. Do not change in the bathroom. Remember to flush the toilet and wash your hands after using the bathroom. 

    6. Do not eat as you are going on stage.

    7. Be prepared for your entrances by waiting in the appropriate location.

  8. Artists respect and etiquette

    1. You are collaborating with many individuals to bring your production and this festival together. We honor this with great pride and excitement. It is incredibly important that we respect each other's boundaries, talk kindly to one another, support one another, avoid gossip and if there are any issues that arise please let us know. info@tubufest.com
